Violations and Poor Staffing Are Responsible for Low Rating of More than 20% of Arizona Nursing Homes

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS] now publishes ratings for nursing homes throughout the country. These rating are calculated by evaluating quality indicators and staffing ratios for every nursing home in the nation. These ratings can be found on the CMS website, www.medicare.gov/nhcompare.

In the data just released, 22% percent of Arizona nursing homes received CMS' lowest rating of "much below average."

Our experience at Solomon & Relihan also indicates that there is a direct relationship between poor staffing and abuse and neglect of residents.

Even though 14% of Arizona nursing homes received CMS' highest rating of "much above average," families seeking quality nursing home care must do more than merely rely on this new rating system. There is no substitute for visiting prospective nursing homes, talking to the families of residents, and reviewing the facility's past inspection surveys.
